Holiday Movie Favorites

There are a couple of holiday movies that make me smile every year. I can watch them on endless loops because, really, who gets tired of holiday movies? Christmas music is another story. Christmas music should never, ever start until after Thanksgiving is over. Never. If it does, I’m way over it by the time Christmas rolls around. So with that in mind, here are some clips from some of my favorite Christmastime movies. Enjoy!

Christmas Music

As you can tell from my previous post, I am not in favor of beginning Christmas music early. However, my favorite local radio station–normally playing light adult contemporary such as Faith Hill and Michael Bublé–has begun playing all Christmas music all the time for the remainder of the season. As a result, I’ve had to resort to other means of entertainment in my car. I’ve begun listening to the local AC Top 40 station, which usually features artists like Britney Spears and Lady Gaga–neither of whom I would ever listen to voluntarily these days. So what’s my other option? The local talk radio station.

I used to listen to talk radio a lot. A LOT. But I had to stop when I realized the negativity of the constant news feed was getting to me, particularly in the mornings when I’m trying to start my day on a positive note. The only talk radio I can listen to and enjoy is my own employer’s show, “The Dave Ramsey Show.” It’s about life and money and normally doesn’t cross over much with news programs. But as for the others? I can live blissfully without it.

Anyway, all of this is to say I don’t have a radio station to listen to between now and Christmas. Well, I don’t until I’m in the mood for Christmas music. And I can’t think of anyone I know who wants to listen to Christmas music 24/7 no matter how much they might love it. After all, if you hear something over and over and over again, it starts to lose its charm.

So what’s a girl to do?

Santa’s coming

Christmas Shopping at Wal-MartImage by Old Shoe Woman via Flickr

Whether we like it or not, Christmas is just around the corner. We haven’t even started shopping yet in my household. I’m not ready. The shopping, endless Christmas music, malls pushing their sales. It all just makes me feel like a Scrooge. And I don’t want to be a Scrooge.

I have a million and one things to be thankful for this year, not the least of which is my fabulous new job working for Dave Ramsey. I get to feel like I’m a part of something bigger every day. But this time of year…*sigh*. I just wish it could be more like Thanksgiving. You get together with your family and friends and celebrate what you’re thankful for with a great meal. And it seems like all Christmas about is “Gimme, gimme, gimme!”

I love to give. Dave teaches us that giving is one of the best parts of becoming wealthy. And I agree. I love to leave a great tip at a restaurant or donate to a favorite charity or even tithe to my church. But at those times, it isn’t an obligation. It comes from the heart, and it feels right. God wants us to be givers.

With all the hype surrounding the Christmas season, it’s just a little harder to get excited about it. And it makes it just a little easier to get tired of it before the season even really gets underway.
